Last minutes of the year! T_T

We all said our favorite thing about Prism. Then we ate food and looked at our fun scrapbooks and chatted.

But there are also lots of things going on!

To go in order

Tomorrow - There is a survey by the Affice of Anti-Violence Initiatives. It is a survey on student's attitudes, response, and sexual experience put on by Dr. Eileen Alexy and Jacqueline Deitch-Stackhouse. You can take the survey in SCP201 (the math computer lab) between 3:30-6:00pm tomorrow. That’s the last time they are doing it. Doing the survey enters you to win $50, you must be 18 to do it.

Tomorrow Night – Game night in the Prism center. Hang out, play games, be awesome. 8:30pm, be there.

Friday – 5pm meet at the ATMs if you want to go to Fridays! Dress up, be silly, come eat with us!

Friday – A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer: Selected Readings. 8pm in the Library Auditorium, men speak out against violence towards women

Saturday – Picnic behind ABE at 2pm (if the weather is nice. Look for an email)

Sunday – Equality Forum’s Sunday Out! We’re leaving from the ATMs at around 11am to go into Philly.

June 6th – Prism is hosting the NJ Gay Men’s Chorus in the Music Building’s concert hall. Tickets are $15 for students, $20 for non-students. Email us if you’re interested in more info.

Do you like Six Flags? Well someone is selling discount tickets to Six Flags that are good all summer. Reply if you’re interested and we’ll get you more info. $35 tickets

If you have pictures from events please send the nice versions to the prism account, so we don’t have to Facebook stalk to get them.

GRADUATING SENIORS! WE LOVE YOU!
~Keep in touch with Prism! You can send a new email to the prism account to keep getting the minutes or we can put you on the alumni email list (for events and whenever we remember)

Hey guys,

Today we talked about NDOS and why it exists. We talked about how people are silenced and different ways you can react to people when they say things like “that’s so gay”

But hey, we have a lot of events coming up and fast. So I’ll try and be organized about this.

April 24 – TOMORROW – Baking night in the south main lounge at 7:30pm. If you signed up for it you probably already got an email reminder. But we’ll at least be making cupcakes and then anything else people want to bring and make.

April 25 – National Day of silence
- 10am-3pm – we will be in the student center tabling and demonstrating
- 5pm – meeting in the alumni grove (between Eick and the Library) to speak out against being silenced
- 8pm – Breaking the Silence party. (7pm if you want to help setup) in the Cromwell main lounge.

April 26 – do you want to help take the stakes around campus down on Saturday morning? Reply and I’ll give you more directions

April 30 – Last meeting of the Semester. There will be a party and scrapbooks to look at. Come be silly with us

May 2 – The Friday, the first reading day. TGI Friday’s Formal night. We’ll dress up extra nice and go out to dinner. It’ll be fun and silly. Meet at the ATMs at 5pm to get a ride.

May 4 – Equality Forum in Philly. It runs from 11am-6pm. It’s a big all day street fair. A more detailed email is coming.

I hope to see everyone Friday!

Our Ice breaker was to figure out what you could act out with a plate and then each person had to repeat the action and make up their own.

We discussed what it means to be a part of the GLBT community. Especially if you are an ally or know some and what that means. We also discussed stereotypes. Some questions we went over follow:

What does the work “Ally” mean to you?
Definitions of “ally” in regards to the GLBT community

Why are GLBT Allies different?
-They are assumed to be GLBT themselves

Why do people assume?
-stereotyping
-sexuality is intangible, it’s not something you can see

What does stereotype mean?
-assumptions based on a group you are a part of

Why do we stereotype?
- They are mental shortcuts, so we don’t have to get to know everyone in the world
- It’s easy to categorize people and make some people you meet exceptions

We then played stereotype charades. That means you pull a stereotype out of a box, act it out, other people have to guess the stereotype, then we discussed why it was acted out that way and why we guessed it.
Some examples were: 7-eleven worker, owner of a dry cleaning place, metrosexual man, terrorist, gay man, Italian, welfare mom, lesbian.

The media supports stereotypes in movies, news, and TV shows.

Announcements:
LIONSFEST is coming up next Wednesday before our meeting. Come out and see up and play games between 12 and 3pm in front of TW
-email Brenda if you want to help

We decided that it seems like a pretty good idea so we will be trying to get her to come to our meeting next Wednesday. More details later if that’s when she comes.

Tom asks that we spread the word of Pink pistols, gun rights for everyone.

We went to SSB 103 (in case you came looking for us late, now you know where we disappeared to) and watched two clips of Kinsey.
Kinsey did a study in the 40s about Human sexuality.
Hey guys!

Our meeting this week was mostly discussion so these aren’t going to be very detailed minutes.

First Dave came in to talk a little about what we can do about Homophobia on Campus. Especially after Wired upset so many people. So, Prism is thinking about having a comedy show where we will challenge people to avoid making fun of any particular group.

THE HAVEN IS OPEN!
The Haven is an email based support service for anyone who might be questioning, curious, worried about coming out, or might not know how to deal with a friend in these situations.

Then Emily, our Haven Coordinator, started a discussion.
-Here are some questions that we used to get the discussion started
->Is campus a safe place to come out?
--- we ended up talking about how it depends on your situation, your social group, and whether or not you even want to come out.
->How do you think Prism is thought of on campus?
--- We are somewhere in the middle, people think we do pretty good events most of the time but we have not changed thing in awhile
--- assumptions that if you are in Prism you must be GLBT run rampant
->What kind of experiences do people having coming out as Bi or Trans?
--- There were some stories told about how parents react to these sorts of things.
--- Pressure on Bisexuals to act straight
--- Pressure on Trans people to fit in with another group

ANNOUNCEMENTS
-The Drag Show is coming up. Remember if you want to perform or help out, email the prism account (you can just hit reply)
- NDOS is in April, look for emails about participating

Have a Great Spring Break
See you in two weeks!

So This meeting was pretty useful. Our Advisor Michael came in and talked about life after college and how to find a job that you will be comfortable in.

Here are some Highlights:
- Think about what you wanted to be when you grow up at age five. Then think about what you want to be now. Do you know what you want to be now? It’s probably changed a whole lot.
- When you go to a job interview remember that not only are they interviewing you, but you are interviewing them to see if the job will fit you.
- What are you looking for in a job? Make a list.
- What are you looking for in a place to live?
- Remember: Nowhere else you live will ever be like college.
- Location is very important. Different places are friendlier towards different things, you want to look for places that you will feel comfortable.
- Think about whether or not you should come out at your job? When should you come out if you choose to? At your interview? As soon as you start? After you have job security?
- Be aware of what you put on your resume, some people will make assumptions.

Updates
- We will be fundraising by vacuuming rooms in the Towers.
->Tabling on Monday 3/3 and Tuesday 3/4 3pm-7pm
->Vacuuming Wednesday 3/5 10am-2pm
-> Contact Heather
- Annual Drag Show
->To be held on April 9, It’s a Wednesday night
->If there is anyone not signed up to perform who wants to contact Hannah

-Haven
->If you want to be a facilitator Contact Emily W

Announcements
-One Acts are this week. 4 one act plays directed by students. Starts at 8pm, runs through Saturday (also a 2pm Matinee on Sat) $4 admission, It’s in the Black box.
->Go because Liz is Directing!

-Movie Night this Saturday at 9pm
-We will be watching The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Here's the IMDb description:
->Two drag-queens (Anthony/Mitzi and Adam/Felicia) and a transsexual (Bernadette) contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert. They head west from Sydney aboard their lavender bus, Priscilla. En route, it is discovered that the woman they've contracted with is Anthony's wife. Their bus breaks down, and is repaired by Bob, who travels on with them.
-Maybe bring some money in case we want to order food.
-Brenda will bring the left over snacks from the wedding, but if you'd like to bring something to share, that'd be awesome.

Tomorrow night 8:30 in the Prism Center

Shameless plugs –
Vagina Monologues this weekend
Cabaret Night - Next weekend
One Acts – are the weekend after (the shorts are coming, the shorts are coming, the shorts are coming, the shorts are coming)

The Actual Meeting
- On the floor we had two posters - Civil Unions & Marriage. Just write whatever comes to mind when you think of these things. Followed by Discussion.

What you think about civil unions?
•tear
•Partners
•Lip service to equality
•Meaningless on federal level
•Legal sort of
•Make believe
•Not good enough
•If marriage is in the eyes of god then people in front of (what?)
•What’s civil about it?
•Separate but equal
•Much love
•Very cold
•1 years old in New Jersey
•Lacks same connotation
•Steeping stone
•Rush Limbaugh's still not happy
•Stepping stone?

Discuss these- an icky compromise? Try to make people happy? Distinction
Historical context- women, African Americans- it’s all in steps. Step in the right direction 
So much hate on it - positive light? Nothing happens overnight. Very much about compromise- can’t do in one huge jump. Is it a crucial step?
If these walls could talk too? – Issues with Civil Unions: protections not federal

What you think about Marriage:
•Drawing ?? Kids breaking plates
•Eep forever!
•Viva Las Vegas
•Wife
•Love
•Dad’s not invited
•Happy family according to my mother
•Sanctity love and commitment
•it’s a nice day for a white wedding
•in laws
•prenup
•divorce
•I love you
•commitment
•romance
•you need to get married so I can be a grand pa
•Britney spears
•husband
•new beginning
•end of current life

Discuss- Husband and wife vs. Partners, marriage vs. civil unions. Use of the words- civil unions. Power with words. Partner makes us think of law firms or “swing your partners round and round”. Not a life-liver
Civil unionize? So much more then a partner- you want to spend your life together. Is there a better word? Temporary, not permanent. Civil Union or Married should be able to call it whatever they want. Lesbian couple who technically is CU and they call eachother wife and have kids and in their eyes are married
So much….marriage has so much more weight in the socio-linguistic sense- bound up in the relationship positive connotations- image in the surrounding community- not so much weight with a CU. Your perception versus the perception of community.

What happens when you end a civil union? Secede from your union!
Professor- talked about straight teacher used the word “partner” as opposed to husband. Partner has a same sex connotation- otherwise you’d be husband and wife.
Partner as all inclusive term? Better- signifies equality- on the same level. Husband and wife dichotomy? Wife is less, husband more? Be more equal.
Partner is Gender Neutral
Spouse?
One couple is a spouse, many couples are spices.
Espousas are handcuffs - the linguistic history are spouses are housebound- chained up?
The way it sounds- are you going to call your child your offspring? My spawn? Clinical term - textbook. Wife lover partner is more of an affectionate term?
Terminology is slang?
Kid?
People are comfortable using different terms. Use the terms you’re most comfortable with. It’s all good. Appropriate for them - connotates equality or whatever serves your need you should feel comfortable using.
Slang terms for your wife? Bitch- so many negative terms for women- find something more equal.
Partner- doesn’t matter- simply dictates love.
You should talk to your “insert your choice of words now” and you don’t want to be somewhere and call them the wrong thing in public. Awkward point “what are we?” Okay, we’re civil unionized. What do we call each other? Wife, Partner? Husband? Ole Ball and Chain

At Freeheld- what are you- what’s your relationship? Are you lovers? Dating? Don’t know what to say?
TALK IT OUT! Communication.
Love mates?
civil unions - marriage in the eyes of god? Marriage has religious connotations- marriages in a courthouse? Civil Union? Why something else?
All this work to get something less?

So we had a rather eventful meeting today.

We had Anthony from the Princeton review come. He’s a recent graduate of Rutgers University who majored in English and he told us a little bit about Life after college and what to do about Graduate school

--GRE – What most of us will take, the basic grad school test. Computer adaptive, the next question depends on whether you got the previous ones correct or not. (if it gets really easy you’re doing badly)
->Math is about High school level
->English is the usual and there are two essays
->Each section out of 800 points

He can give us discounts on Princeton Review classes. Just ask.

Some grad school advice: Don’t flood colleges with recommendation letters. Only send them the amount they ask for.

It’s that time of year again
Elections
->Position descriptions are attached. We still have copies if you want a hard copy.
->TONIGHT 8:45-9:30 there is an open eteam meeting so that everyone can come visit us and ask us questions about our specific positions. Come and find out what you might want to run for.

Nominations

President – Elaine
---Beth declined
Vice President – Erika
---Emily declined
Treasurer – Erika
---Allison and Stacey declined
Secretary – Beth
---Stacey declined

Remember, you can nominate more people next week. Don’t hesitate! Come find out what it all entails tonight.

Announcements
->8pm tonight there is an openly gay assemblyman speaking in the library auditorium
->Intersex Awareness tomorrow night (Thurs) 8pm in Forcina 134
->Friday – AIDS benefit talent showcase, 8pm in TW Main Lounge. Doors open at 7, $3

We had a mini Halloween party for our meeting this week. With lots of chips and cookies for snacks.
We also had a costume contest. WE had some pirates, a mystery, Thumbelina, a softball player, and iPod commercial character, a big gay werewolf, a technophile dryad, a kitsune demon, little red riding hood/whore, the perfect boyfriend, a mod girl, Prince charming… and probably more. Sorry if I missed you, those are the ones I remember.
The big gay wolf (Heather) won the costume contest. She won and Orange (for Halloween) “gay, fine by me” Tshirt. Yay Heather!

We played a really fun ice breaker based on the idea of follow the leader. We made the whole room do silly things.

Also we have several announcements:
November 7 – There’s a gay politician coming to campus. Library auditorium 8pm
November 8 – Intersex Documentary in 8pm in Forcina 134 (we think, room might change)
November 9 – AIDS Awareness Talent Showcase (if there’s anyone left who wants to participate and hasn’t said anything yet, get moving) In the TW Main Lounge, $3 to get in.

Next Meeting:
We’ll start talking about elections: what are the positions? What does every position do? Who is eligible for each position? And then questions and such. Also, big fun icebreaker!

We’ll have some more social activities coming up soon. So look for them.

Meeting Minutes for October 17

Hey Prismers,

We had Tina Tormey, Assistant director of ResEd talk to us today about the differences between physical sex and gender.
We talked about:
->Gender Identity
->The social construction of Gender

We were also asked to get in groups and try to figure out how to define gender.

Sandra Bem is a social Scientist who did a study on how gender is defined based on what we associate with male and female characteristics
So for fun and education we took the Bem Sex Role inventory
Which you can find here if you’re interested: http://www.neiu.edu/~tschuepf/bsri.html
Column 1 is femininity, column 2 is masculinity, column 3 is neutral.
4.5 is the average, so above 4.5 on only one means you are more masculine or feminine.
Above on both is androgynous, below on both is undifferentiated (sort of like androgynous but less into roles) Google it all if you’re really curious

From this we learned that we have a lot of people in Prism who can’t do math without calculators…..
This also lead to discussion on where we have seen sex roles. Everything from toys and happy meals to how stores are set up. WE even talked a little bit about how things have changed a bit from when we were growing up through now. Lots of good stuff.

And we have more book recommendations:
1. Out & About Campus: Personal Accounts by Lesbian, Gay, & Transgendered College Students
2. Gender Trouble
3. Reconstructing Gender: A Multicultural Anthology
4. Wrapped in Blue
5. Women & Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender
6. Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the construction of Sexuality
7.
We played a ‘fun’ game called “Whatcha doing?” It was a little fast paced and the courtyard still has that annoying sunny patch…

So, Prism did some CA training before everyone moved in this year. We discussed some of the issues members have had on campus and some of the issues CA mentioned.
We also ended up discussing discrimination in jobs, especially in education.
- Job security in certain fields can always be a little iffy when sexuality gets involved.
- There are some very sexist teachers on campus (including on that looks like santa)
- A Trans speaker would be a good idea and a way to get something out there that a lot of people do not think about
- Make SBNN mandatory for Freshmen
->Redo SBNN for a bigger audience
- Be careful of your roommate and how comfortable they are with how you express yourself.
->It’s not a safe zone if both of you aren’t safe and excepting
Every one shared some stories even our advisor. Yay Michael!

Julie Recommends some books for Education Majors:
- Last Closet by Rita M Kissen
- One Teacher in Ten by Kevin Jennings

Dan Says: GLBT support group is starting in early October in Counseling Services. Probably every Wednesday 5:30pm
http://www.tcnj.edu/~sa/counseling/groups.html
Second group down

NCOD
-Sign up for the coming out monologues!
-> if you didn’t and you’re interested email Erika or sign up next meeting.
-> You can tell your own story or the story of a friend and how it affected you or just about anything else you can come up with. Allies are certainly welcome.
-NCOD committee should be figuring out meeting times soon.

Intersex Awareness
- Documentary October 4.

Remember: If you ever want to borrow movies or books from the Prism office you have to sign them out.
